Nice to meet you
LAST UPDATED - MAY 2024
Rebekah Tock is a Singaporean multi-disciplinary maker of useful, curious and beautiful things.
(she just does not like the phrase "aspiring graphic designer") Born in Singapore, she has a degree in Digital Communications and Integrated Media, and a diploma in Communication Design.
Rebekah's journey is a little different than most. She did not plan on pursuing a career in design at all. In fact, it started with her passion for fine art, yes, as in drawing and painting.
It all started when she was 4. Her exasperated parents had sent her to all sorts of classes, wanting to see which area she would excel in. Ballet, jazz, choir, phonics... but she, quite frankly, sucked at all of them. So as a last ditch effort, her parents decided to send her for art classes at Rus' Art Studio. And for the first time, her parents were able to witness Rebekah enjoying herself, not shedding a single tear! Thus, they let her stay.
At age 11, Rebekah became truly serious art and began looking into the Art Elective Programme, or O-level Higher Art, offered in several Secondary Schools in Singapore. She ultimately decided on Zhonghua Secondary School. Her 4 years there were bittersweet, and she did fail a few academic subjects here and there but she always topped her class in Higher Art. Life was great... until the dreaded O-levels rolled around in Secondary 4. She did not know what she wanted to do with her life. You could call it, a quarter-life crisis. Everyone seemed to know what they wanted to do, where they wanted to go. But Rebekah? Nope. She could not seem to decided between studying Art Teaching in the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) or Fine Art in the Singapore School of The Arts (SOTA). Her parents urged her to go for Art Teaching, after all, the job would provide an iron rice bowl. Yet, something did not feel right, she was hesitant and really did not know if she could "draw and draw and draw for the rest of her life".
But life surely does throw one in the most unexpected situations. A chance encounter with a fellow Temasek Polytechnic student sent her to the Open House in 2015. There, she was inexplicably drawn to one course: Communication Design in Design School. The works exhibited were beautiful. She learned all she could about the course when she went home and weighed her options. It was a risky choice, she knew nothing about design. She spent a good 2 months in a dilemma before deciding to try for the Direct Polytechnic Admission (DPA) into Communication Design. To everyone's surprise, she got accepted! Her parents urged her again to reject the offer and just go for the Art Teaching course in NAFA. But, she was certain this time. It was meant to be, Communication Design was the course for her.
Fast forward 5 years, she has graduated with a diploma in Communication Design and is having the time of her life in Digital Communications and Integrated Media. Sure, there are times when work gets too much and she just wants to curl up and cry, but she has never given up and always tries her best in all that she does. The work she has produced are all unique to her and created with love and care. She is enjoying design and her specialization, Branding, to the max and hopes that her sincerity will reflect in all her works.
All in all, design is probably the best choice she has ever made.
